I'll be doing a full write-up for this for a special Godzilla event on Classic-Horror.com in May, so I'm going to refrain from saying anything here. However, I am working on something related to the movie that I will post here a little later.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it, it's a classic of the giant monster genre, yadda yadda yadda.

I'm actually not 100% on how I feel about it. I know I dig it a lot, but the feeling of reverence isn't coming. There's a lot to pick through thematically, but it feels like sometimes Honda is too spare with his symbolism and other times he smacks you with a rusty iron glove (the disagreement between Hideto and the paleontologist over the handling of Godzilla in particular is Quite Obvious).

It also suffers some from the fact that Gojira shows up, causes a little destruction and then leaves. There's no motivation and there's no real logic behind the attacks. He just shows up where he's needed. He's not motivated by food, clearly... I dunno. It seems a movie that takes the metaphor of its monster this seriously would put some more thought into the monster itself.
